Things to do in Kuantan (An Underrated Place)
Kuantan is the city of Pahang. It may not be the destination of choice compared to Georgetown, Penang or Ipoh, Perak but Kuantan has its gems too.
Read on to find out what else is in store in Pahang other than the overly crowded Genting Highlands and overrated Cameron Highlands.
1. Have a dip at Sungai Pandan Waterfall
If you would like to go somewhere in Malaysia that is not hot and humid but sick of going to Genting or Cameron Highlands then this place is for you.
If you want to avoid the crowd, don’t go on weekends. Sungai Pandan is a good place to chill with family and friends. Try to wear your swimsuits underneath your casual clothes because there are limited areas to change clothes. The washrooms are under renovation.
2. Explore Sungai Lembing Mines
A blast from the past, a town that is truly frozen in time, a good stopover if you are a history buff. Taking in the whole town and after visiting the tin mine will really give you an appreciation and respect of these people whose livelihood were dependent on the mining industry.
The site is under maintenance at the beginning of the year so before visiting do give them a call to check if it’s open for visitors now.
3. Head to Pahang Art Museum
Pahang Art Museum is located in front of a Syariah court. It is a good place to hang out for those interested in art work. If you have an hour to kill, this is a great place to visit.
The place stores collections of art more of quality rather than quantity, and it gives you a deeper idea about the history and contemporary age of Malaysia.
4. Visit Pantai Batu Hitam
Pantai Batu Hitam is one of the most popular places among the locals. Probably because the atmosphere here is very relaxing, many people choose to picnic and spend their weekends here.
From afar, the stones look like dung! When you go near, the stones are black and shiny. Good crowd for a unique beach. As usual, there were food and drinks stalls and stalls selling swim stuff and floats.
5. Check Out Lao Zi Temple
The grounds are quite big. There’s a man made dragon of about 2700 feet. You have to enter via the tail and walk until you come out of its mouth, for luck. In the dragon’s body, there are paintings displayed from beginning to the end.
The temple has nice Chinese artist sculptures, life-sized dinosaurs and dragons, activities like fish feeding and durian eating (during season).
6. Go for Kuantan River Cruise
A private cruise experience will cost around RM600. They will provide snacks and drinks in the boat in case you are hungry/thirsty during the ride. Everyone is required to wear a life jacket and the tour guide will brief everyone on what to do if something went wrong. However, they mentioned that so far nothing bad has happened but it’s good to be extra careful.
Note that you have to book the service first. Walk-ins will be entertained if there are still some empty spots left in the requested time slot.
7. Shop at Super Cowboy
Super Cowboy is a supermarket that retail and wholesale with diversified products. Super Cowboy started its first business in 1994 in Kuantan, Pahang.
Super Cowboy supermarket has 8 branches located in Kuantan, Temerloh, Malacca, Kulai, Batu Pahat, Segamat and has a hotel in Malacca. In line with current technological advancements, they have now expanded their business through online business on platforms such as Shopee and Lazada.
